MEET THE SPEAKERS
Dr Karen Law, Head of Innovation, Health Tech Enterprise
Karen is an experienced business development professional having over 15 years’ experience in innovation development and commercialisation having led the development and commercialisation of innovations developed by research scientists and clinicians. She has negotiated numerous licensing agreements for a diverse range of technologies including therapeutics and devices.. Her career encompasses roles within the public sector and within the business development and strategy team of a UK based biotech company working in the gene therapy field. Karen holds a PhD in Analytical Chemistry and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester.
Jonathan Scales PhD CMRS
Jon Scales has an academic background in economic sociology and over 25 years experience of applied health and social research.
He is currently the Innovation Funding Lead at Cambridge University Hospitals Trust and is also an adviser to the new NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) at Leicester University, where he provides specialist advice for the development of funding bids to the NIHR Invention for Innovation (i4i) Product Development Award funding programme. Prior to March 2023 he was the Innovation and Medtech funding lead at the NIHR Research Design Service (East of England) .
He has over 15 year’s experience of guiding applicants through the NIHR research funding maze. He has worked with a wide range of NHS clinicians from all specialities, as well as academics, entrepreneurs and SMEs to help them develop their health or social care innovation ideas into robust, compelling and successful funding bids. He is a visiting fellow in the School of Health and Social Care at the University of Essex and a fully certified member of the Market Research Society.
